Orientation:

Once when a lion was asleep, a little mouse began running up and down upon him. This soon awakened the lion.

Conflict:

The Lion was angry. Then he then placed his huge paw upon the little mouse and opened his big jaws to swallow him. "Pardon, Oh King," Cried the little mouse, "Forgive me this time and I promise that I will never do it again. Someday if you need help, I will probably help you, King."

Resolution:

The lion was so tickled at the idea of the mouse that the mouse may be able to help him one day. Then, the lion lifted up his pay and let mouse go.

Conflict:

Some time after, the lion was caught in a trap and the hunters. They would carry the lion a live to the king. The Lion was tied into a tree while the hunters looked for a wagon to carry the lion on.

Example of narrative text: the moon


Once upon a time the moon was shining in the sky and playing tiggy with clouds.

Suddenly a big storm came. Lighting flashed, thunder roared and wind blew. Moon got scared and ran away.

Lightning and thunder stooped and say.

“Come back moon. We didn’t mean to scare you.”

Wind stopped and said

“Come back moon. We miss you.”

The clouds stopped and said.

“Come back moom. We want to play.”

Moon heard all friends in the sky. It made him feel happy so back he came

Example of Narrative Text : The Golden Snail

(Folk Tale from East Java)

Dewi Galuh Candra Kirana was a princess from the Kingdom of Daha. She was kind and very beautiful. She was enggaged to Raden Inu Kertapati, the Crown Princes of the Kahuripan Kingdom. Raden Inu Kertapati was wise and very handsome.

Galuh Candra Kirana has a step sister named Galuh Ajeng. Galuh Ajeng was jealous of her. She wanted to marry Raden Inu Kertapati. She looked for a way to get rid of Galuh Candra Kirana. Galur Ajeng went to see an old wicth. The old wicth gace her a spell to curse Galur Candra Kirana. Before cursing her stepsister, Galuh Ajeng slandered her. The King of Daha believed her words and threw Galuh Candra Kirana away from the palace.

The poor pricess lived in misery. She wandered to a beach. There she was cursed and turned into a golden snail. As Keong Emas - The Golden Snail, Galuh Candra Kirana was drifted by the waves; At last she was ashore on a foreign land.

Keong Emas crept to a small village named Dadapan. In that village lived old woman named, Nyai Dadapan. The old woman found Keong Emas. This snail is very beautiful, I will keep it,” she said. She bought Keong Emas to her hut. Nyai Dadapan put the snail in a big earthen jug.


One day Nyai Dadapan came home from fishing.

She didn’t catch any fish, but when she arrived at her hut, she was surprised because dinner was ready. There was much delicious food on the table.

“My oh my……there is delicious food. What a coincidence! I am hungry!” Without thinking twice, she ate up the food.

After her dtomach was full, she realized something.

“Who cooked this food?” she said

The next morning she thought, I will pretend to go fishing. But I will hide behind the door and watch. Nyai Dadapan pretended to go. Then, she secretly hid behind the door.

Not long after that, she saw Keong Emas crept out of the big water jug. Suddenly the snail turned into a beautiful girl. The girl cleaned the hut and cooked a delicious food. Nyai Dadapn came out from behind the door.

Mean while, she seven dwarfs were coming home from work They went inside. There they found Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up She saw the dwarfs said, “What is your name? Snow White said, “My name is Snow White” And, one of the dwarfs, said, “If you wish, You my live here with us. Snow White said, “Oh could I? Thank you.” Then Snow White told the dwarfs the hole story and snow white and the 7 dwarfs lived happily ever after.

Example of Narrative Text : The Story of Sangkuriang

The legend of lake toba or Legenda Danau Toba
(Folk Tale from North Sumatera/Cerita Rakyat Sumatera Utara)

Once upon a time there was a man living in the area of the present day Danau Toba (Toba Lake). He lived in a simple hut in a farming field, did some gardening and fishing for his daily life. One day he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest catch he ever had in his life.

Back home this fish turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her and proposed her to be his wife. She said yes with one condition… the man had to promise not to tell a soul about the secret that she was once a fish, otherwise there would be a huge disaster. The man made the deal and they got married and had a daughter.

Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields. One day, this daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch. He found out and got furious, and shouted “You damned daughter of a fish”.

The daughter ran home and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his promise. She told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come. When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The princess also ran from the house, and each footprint she left became a natural spring. The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake . The princess turned into a fish again and the man became the island of Samosir (the big island in the middle of Lake Toba).

Example of Narrative Text : The Story of Sangkuriang

The Story of Sangkuriang
(Folk Tale from West Java)

Once upon a time, in Sunda - West Java, living a Princes named Dayang Sumbi. Dayang Sumbi had a son named Sangkuriang. Sangkuriang really liked hunting in the jungle and always asked his dong, Tumang, to accompany him to go hunting. Actually Tumang was an incarnation of god and a father of Sangkuring.

One day, As usual Sangkuriang went hunting in the jungle. There he saw a bird in the tree and soon shot the bird. The shot was right on target but the bird flew. Sangkuriang ordered Tumang to run after it, but Tumang didnt' want to do it. Sangkuriang ordered a few times and Tumang kept doing nothing. Sangkuriang got angry. He beat Tumang and drove it away.

As soon as Sangkuriang arrived at home, he told it his mother.

His mother was angry because Sangkuriang had driven Tumang away. Then, Dayang Sumbi beat Sangkuring. Sangkuriang did not like his mother treatment and decided to go from the house.

After that incident, Dayang Sumbi felt regrets. She prayed to God that one day she would meet her son again. Everynight dan everyday she prayed and prayed. Because she prayed diligently, God gave her an eternal beauty and young forever.
After leaving his village for a long time, Sangkuriang went back to his village. He was surprised because his village had changed a lot. He became more surprising and happier when he met a beautiful girl in the village, Dayang Sumbi, which was also his mother.
Sangkuriang proposed her and Dayang Sumbi agreed with his proposal. They planned to get married soon.

One day Dayang Sumbi saw a scar in Sangkuriang's head. She asked him about the scar and Sangkuriang told about it. Dayang Sumbi surprised because Sangkuriang was her son that had left her for a long time. It was impossible for getting married with her own son.

Dayang Sumbi was confused. She asked Sangkuriang to cancel their marriage plan but Sangkuriang didn't agree with it.

Finally, Dayang Sumbi proposed two requirements if Sangkurinag wanted to keep getting married with her. First, He had to damn Citarum river and second, he had to make a canoed to across the river. Both had to bed finished before dawn.

Sangkuriang agreed with both requirements and promised to finish them before dawn.

With his power and helped by his friends and jin, he did the two job and almost finished them.

Dayang Sumbi silently saw Sangkuriang's Job and was surprised because he almost finished them. Because she didn't want Sangkuriang finished before dawn, she asked for people's help to hold red silk cloth in the east of the village.

When Sangkuriang saw the red color in the east of the village, he thought that he failed. He was upset dan break the dam. The water of the dam flew to the village. The village was flooded and drown. He also kicked the big canoe and the big canoe changed into a mountain called Tangkuban Perahu.

After saying that, the Princess’ body shrank and then she turned into Keong Emas again.

“Galuh Ajeng is very cruel,” said Nyai Dadapan sadly.

She prayed, wishing that Galuh Candra Kirana’s suffering will end soon.

Raden Inu Kertapati heard the news that his fiancee was thrown out from the palace. He carried out an investigation and found out that Galuh Candra Kirana was not guilty. Then the Prince went to see the King of Daha.

At least Galuh Ajeng was punished by the King.

Raden Inu kertapati went searching for his fiancee. After walking for hours, he became thirty. He stopped by at nyai Dadapan’s hut to ask for water.

At moment, the princess was looking out of the window. Raden Inu Kertapati saw her.

“My dear Candra kirana!” he cried happily.vanished.
The meeting was very touching
The princess introduced Nyai Dadapan to her fiancee.
The suffering was over.

Raden Inu Kertapati went back to the palace with Galuh Candra kirana. They asked the goodhearted Nyai Dadapan to come along.

The name of Keong Emas or Golden Snail is now used for Teater Keong Emas in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.
